dr. alina sokulska

born in Kyiv, Ukraine, alina sokulska (in lowercase) received her Literary Studies BA and MA degrees at Kyiv State Taras Shevchenko University, and  later a choreography training at Conservatori Superior de Danza, Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, where she has been based since 2017.

alina’s longterm field research of the jazz rooted social dances of the African diaspora since 2011, as well as contemporary dance practice, led her to pursue a Doctoral degree in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies at the University of Barcelona, which she completed in 2024 with her thesis “heterotopian body and the production of space in experimental contemporary choreography of the African diaspora” with a “cum laude” qualification.

the themes and values that have been accompanying alina throughout her Doctoral research, such as individual artistic innovation within the collective tradition, the art of performance as a form of political resistance, verticality of power relations in cultural and historic continuum of performing arts, individual responsibility in the collective production of performance space, among others, have given shape to her pedagogical projects that she has been developing as a curator and educator since 2017 in European cities as well as online: SOUND from the Cat’s Corner (lectorium on dance history), Giant Steps Lab (an educative space for movement research and dance practice), and Evolution Solo Weekend (a festival of social dances, with the collaboration of such artists and educators as Thomas DeFrantz, Frankie Martinez, Chester Whitmore, Josette Wiggan, Max Pollak and Roxane Butterfly).

drawing from both wisdoms of social jazz dances, improvisational and experimental music artists like Steve Coleman that she has been collaborating with, and the challenges from contemporary and conceptual choreography, allowed alina to develop the methodologies and poetics of her own choreographic and performance works.  maintaining her interest to play with the ideas of conventional duration and format, alina works with solo, duo and group choreographies through the lens of interdisciplinary experiments with visual art and music. currently she is exploring the format of lecture performance within the book of sand framework.

alina’s artistic endeavors navigate the themes of identity and memory, approaching body and movement through a dual lens. on one hand, her work draws on her personal experience as a liminal identity, shaped by Ukrainian culture, Syrian ancestry, and the legacy of an immigrant background marked by a military history. on the other hand, she emphasizes the transformative power of performance as a chosen medium, advocating for its capacity to function as an epistemic tool for knowledge processing and critical thinking. motivated by these point of departure, she created SHOWTIME (a series of solos on overproduction of body’s representation), MAGURA (a collaboration with Maria Plotnikova on the ancestral memory and body resilience in the context of the r*ssian military violence in Ukraine), and the book of sand (an ongoing marcomodular performance project about understanding the erased parts of our identities in the  infinite process of knowledge production).

alina’s work has been presented in dance, music, and contemporary art contexts, locally in Barcelona, as well as internationally at Joan Miró Foundation, Theatre de la Ville, Villa Waldberta, Munich Kammespiele, MAC festival La Mercè, Condeduque Center, Montreux Jazz festival, San José Jazz festival, XJazz Berlin festival, among others. as an emerging artist, she has been developing her works as a resident of AIR Munich, Nunart Guinardó, CeRRCa, CC Barceloneta, Auditori Sant Martí, Can Gassol. her works have been supported by INAEM and ICUB (MAGURA, SHOWTIME). curently, alina is working on her multimodular umbrella project the book of sand that has brought her 1st jury award at Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid’24, and is now host by GRANER (Fábrica de Creació de Mercat de les Flors) in Barcelona throughout 2025 and by O Espaço do Tempo, Montemor-o-Novo, scheduled for 2026.
