dr. alina sokulska

a Ukrainian with Syrian roots, born in Kyiv, based in Barcelona, alina sokulska is a choreographer, dance & performance artist.

Doctor of Philosophy (“cum laude”) in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies, MA graduate in Literary Studies, and having studied choreography at Conservatori Superior de Danza, Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, she is continuing her artistic research within the medium of movement.

alina’s experience of choreographing live with jazz and improvisational music has shaped her movement language and pushed her to investigate movement languages through spontaneous composition.

in her work, alina explores the body through the topics of power relations, identity and memory, through the perspectives of decoloniality and critical studies, understanding the body as an artistic medium that can disturb our understanding of the complexities within the current epistemic framework. these questions aligned her research endeavour in both in artistic and academic practices.

alina’s works have been recognized internationally and shown at leading music and dance festivals and venues in Europe, as well as art institutions.
